The Just Shall Live by Faith
Primary Texts: Habakkuk 2:4; Hebrews 11:1–6; 2 Corinthians 5:7
Introduction
Faith is not merely a belief system—it is a way of life. Scripture never calls us simply to believe by faith, but to live by faith. In a world driven by sight, certainty, and control, God calls His people to walk a different path.
The Bible declares:
“The just shall live by faith.”
This is not poetic language. It is a spiritual principle.
I. What Does It Mean to Live by Faith?
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)
Living by faith means trusting God beyond what we can see, feel, or understand.
Faith is:
- Confidence in God’s promises
- Trust in God’s character
- Dependence on God’s Word
Faith is not denial of reality. Faith is reliance on God’s reality.
II. Faith Begins with Trust in God’s Word
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17)
Faith is not self-generated. It is cultivated through God’s Word.
When God speaks:
- Faith listens
- Faith believes
- Faith responds
We cannot live by faith if we rarely hear from God. The Word of God anchors faith in unstable times.
III. Living by Faith Means Walking, Not Just Believing
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)
Faith is active. It moves. It obeys.
Many believe God mentally but hesitate to follow Him practically.
Biblical faith always produces action:
- Noah built the ark
- Abraham left his homeland
- Moses confronted Pharaoh
- Peter stepped out of the boat
Faith that never moves is faith that never matures.
IV. Faith Often Requires Trusting God in Uncertainty
“By faith Abraham obeyed… not knowing where he was going.” (Hebrews 11:8)
God rarely gives the full picture. He gives the next step.
Living by faith means:
- Trusting God without all the answers
- Obeying God without full clarity
- Moving forward without guaranteed outcomes
Faith is not knowing where the path leads. Faith is knowing Who leads the path.
V. Faith Is Tested and Strengthened Through Trials
“That the genuineness of your faith… may be found to praise, honor, and glory.” (1 Peter 1:7)
Faith that is never tested is faith that is never proven.
Trials do not destroy faith. They refine it.
God uses pressure to:
- Purify our trust
- Remove self-reliance
- Deepen dependence on Him
Faith grows strongest when we learn to trust God in the storm.
VI. Living by Faith Pleases God
“But without faith it is impossible to please Him.” (Hebrews 11:6)
God is not impressed by talent alone. He is not moved by effort alone.
God delights in faith.
Faith says:
“God, I trust You—even here.”
Every step of faith honors God. Every act of trust brings Him pleasure.
VII. Faith Leads to Righteous Living
“Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” (Romans 4:3)
True faith changes how we live.
Faith:
- Produces obedience
- Fuels perseverance
- Shapes character
- Aligns us with God’s will
We are not saved by works. But living faith will always produce them.
Conclusion: A Call to Walk by Faith
God is calling His people beyond comfort. Beyond fear. Beyond sight.
Living by faith means trusting God:
- When answers are delayed
- When circumstances are uncertain
- When obedience is costly
The same God who calls us to walk by faith Promises to walk with us every step of the way.
“The just shall live by faith.”
Closing Prayer
Father, increase our faith. Help us to trust You beyond what we see and feel. Teach us to walk in obedience, confidence, and surrender. May our lives testify that You are faithful. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
