Love That Changes Everything

Primary Texts: John 3:16; Romans 5:6–8; 1 John 4:7–10

Introduction

Few words are used more often—and understood less—than the word love. The world defines love as emotion, attraction, or personal benefit. But the Bible reveals a love that is deeper, stronger, and far more costly.

God’s love is not merely something He does. God’s love is who He is.

Scripture does not say God has love. It says God is love.

I. The Source of Love Is God Himself

“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God…” (1 John 4:7)

True love does not originate in humanity. It originates in God.

Human love can be conditional. God’s love is covenantal.

Before we ever loved God, Before we ever sought God, Before we ever understood God— He loved us.

II. God’s Love Is Initiating, Not Reactive

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

God did not wait for us to clean ourselves up. He did not wait for repentance before extending love.

God’s love:

  • Came while we were broken
  • Reached us while we were rebellious
  • Met us while we were undeserving

The cross is not proof of our worthiness. The cross is proof of God’s love.

III. God’s Love Is Revealed at the Cross

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…” (John 3:16)

Love is measured by what it is willing to give.

God did not give an angel. God did not give a possession. God gave His Son.

The cross shows us:

  • The seriousness of sin
  • The justice of God
  • The mercy of God
  • The depth of God’s love

At the cross, love and justice met. Mercy triumphed.

IV. God’s Love Is Personal and Intentional

“I have loved you with an everlasting love.” (Jeremiah 31:3)

God’s love is not generic. It is personal.

He knows your failures. He knows your doubts. He knows your past.

Yet He still says:

“I have loved you with an everlasting love.”

You are not loved because you are perfect. You are loved because He is faithful.

V. Nothing Can Separate Us from the Love of God

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life… nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38–39)

Circumstances do not cancel God’s love. Failure does not exhaust God’s love. Weakness does not diminish God’s love.

God’s love is not fragile. It is eternal.

VI. God’s Love Transforms How We Live

“We love Him because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)

God’s love is not passive. It is transformative.

When we receive God’s love:

  • Fear loses its grip
  • Shame loses its voice
  • Obedience becomes joyful
  • Love for others becomes possible

We do not obey to earn love. We obey because we are loved.

VII. We Are Called to Reflect God’s Love

“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35)

The world will not be convinced by arguments alone. It will be convinced by love displayed.

God’s love in us should be:

  • Visible
  • Sacrificial
  • Forgiving
  • Truthful

We are not called merely to talk about love. We are called to walk in love.

Conclusion: Come and Receive the Love of God

God’s love is not something you achieve. It is something you receive.

Some are striving. Some are hiding. Some are doubting they are worthy.

But today, God says:

“Come to Me.”

Rest in His love. Be changed by His love. Live from His love.

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for loving us when we could not love You back. Help us to receive Your love fully and reflect it faithfully. Let our lives be living testimonies of Your grace and compassion. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
